Irvine Welsh & Robert Carlyle

Begbie’s back…

In celebration of the launch of his latest novel The Blade Artist, we welcomed Leith’s own literary superstar Irvine Welsh to the Usher Hall in Edinburgh – and he didn’t come alone! As filming gets underway on Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting sequel, it was a treat to hear Begbie himself — Scottish screen icon Robert Carlyle — read from the novel, which explores his later life as an artist trying to keep his violent past at bay.

Working in partnership with Leith Libraries, we were able to offer 50 free tickets to library users who had never previously attended an Edinburgh International Book Festival event, helping a community which lies at the heart of Trainspotting and its sequels to hear from two artists whose careers have been in part defined by that world.
